The third-generation Mercury Cougar XR7 (1974-1976), introduced both design and marketing changes to the model line including being offered solely as a two-door coupe (dropping the convertible from the previous generations) and with the body being mounted
on a larger 114-inch wheelbase (same as the Ford Torino).
During this era, the Cougar was not a true hardtop although fitted with frameless door glass and lacking a fixed B-pillar, the rear side glass was fixed in place (did not retract). To distinguish the model line, the Cougar was fitted with a vinyl roof, C-pillar opera windows, a special XR-7 trim package and a “prowling cat” hood ornament. Furthermore, the former 351 ‘Cleveland’ engine was replaced with the updated 351M ‘Windsor’ engine. Inside, six-passenger seating was standard with a “Twin Comfort Lounge” 50/50 split bench seat and offering a choice of cloth or vinyl upholstery.
The Cougar we are offering provides a unique opportunity to get your “paws” on an all-original, 1-owner car. This gorgeous Saddle Bronze XR7 with two-tone tan Interior and a 3-speed column-shift automatic transmission was purchased new by the current owner and comes with the original Window Sticker.
Immediately after purchasing the Cougar in 1975, the owner had the car professionally rust-proofed. So today, with only original 39K miles, there is no body rust or frame rot.
